Cultural tour of Scotland

On this tour – Scottish and Gaelic culture, Edinburgh, local food, whisky, early Scottish life, art & crafts, highland & island life, Isle of Skye, the Western Isles, clan heritage, traditional music, spectacular west highland scenery and the harbour town of Oban.

Day 1. Edinburgh – Our city tour includes the historic sites which, have made the city and Scotland so well known; Edinburgh Castle, The Old Town of Edinburgh, The Burgh of Canongate, The Palace of Holyrood House, The Grassmarket and West Bow, St Giles Cathedral, Greyfriars Kirk and graveyard. We will visit a traditional pub, eat fabulous Scottish food and enjoy traditional music at an old town Inn.

Day 2. To Ullapool. Travelling north and west through glorious highland scenery including a stop Blair Castle and then the highland town of Inverness we travel to Ullapool on the North West coast. Overnight.

Day 3. Western Isles – Morning ferry from Ullapool to Isle of Harris. We will visit the world famous Harris Tweed weaving and knitting, the spectacular sound of Taransay and enjoy the mountainous scenery of South and North Harris as we travel to Stornoway, the main town of the of the Outer Hebrides. Overnight in Stornoway where you will enjoy local food and traditional music.

Day 4. Western Isles – We will visit the Uig Heritage centre of the Isles set in a spectacular location. We will visit an Iron Age house, Calanais Standing Stones c3000BC, Dun Carloway Broch an Iron Age defensive tower and a traditional thatched house with byre and furnished with a peat fire. Overnight in Stornoway.

Day 5. Skye – We take the morning ferry to Uig on the Isle of Skye. We spend the day touring the Island including a visit to Dunvegan Castle, home of the Macleod’s of Skye and look at the history and geology of this fascinating island. Overnight on Skye.

Day 6. To Oban – Travelling back to the mainland we travel through spectacular highland scenery looking at Jacobite history and their culture, stopping at a wonderful seafood restaurant and on to the harbour town of Oban.

Day 7. Oban – We will visit Kilmartin Glen the centre of the ancient kingdom of Dalraida. Here we will examine the relationship between Scotland’s richest pre-historic landscape and the culture of its people. We will visit the Oban Whisky Distillery where you will take a distillery tour and enjoy a dram! In Oban you have the opportunity to spend the evening at a Ceilidh and enjoy Scottish music and dance. The local restaurants in Oban are full of local seafood and are superb. Overnight Oban.

Day 8. Touring to Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Wildlife we may see – Red Deer, Eagles & other birds of prey, Dolphin, Seals, Puffins, Whales.
